Payout partner

By · Last updated

Payout partner refers to the local institution that pays recipients in the destination market for a cross-border payment company. It pays by bank deposit, mobile wallet credit or cash pickup.

How it works

A sending firm rarely holds licenses and accounts in every receiving country. Instead it contracts with local banks, aggregators, mobile wallet operators or cash networks. Remitly says such partners may source FX locally, accept payments and deposit funds into recipient accounts. Intermex calls its partners paying agents, often banks or large retail chains.

The payout partner usually needs funding before it pays out. That makes each partner both a liquidity destination and a credit exposure. Concentration matters too. Intermex discloses that one paying agent, Grupo Elektra, handles a significant share of its Latin American volume.

Pitfalls include relying on one partner per corridor and weak reconciliation of partner balances. Another is ignoring the partner's own cut-off times and holidays. Partners may be locally regulated, so their compliance standing also affects your continuity.

Example

Illustrative example: A firm holds $2,000,000 with its Philippines payout partner, and daily payouts average $500,000. Without a top-up, the balance covers four days. If the partner also requires a $500,000 minimum balance, usable cover falls to three days.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a payout partner and a disbursement partner?

In practice the terms are used interchangeably. Both mean the local entity that completes the last leg of a transfer. Public filings tend to say disbursement partner or paying agent.

Should we use more than one payout partner per corridor?

Many firms do, to reduce dependence on one counterparty. A second partner adds routing options during outages. It also splits prefunding across two balances, so total capital needs can rise unless routing is managed closely.
