What is corridor liquidity management?

By ·

In cross-border payments, corridor liquidity management is keeping enough money in the right place for each sending and receiving route, such as US dollars to Mexican pesos, so payouts never stop and little cash sits idle. It means watching the prefunded balance with each payout partner, the top-ups in flight, the payout rate and the bank holidays at both ends, corridor by corridor. It is not the interest rate corridor that central banks use to steer short-term rates, which is a monetary policy term.

What it covers

Position: how much is held for each corridor today, at each payout partner and in local accounts or wallets.

Runway: how many days that balance lasts at the current payout rate, counting top-ups already on the way.

Timing: cut-off times and bank holidays in the funding and payout countries, which decide when a top-up must leave to land in time.

Cost: money held above what payouts need is idle float with a funding cost; too little means failed payouts.

How teams do it

Most money transfer operators run it from a morning spreadsheet: collect balances, estimate outflows, decide top-ups. Tools built for it pull balances from banks, payout partners and wallets automatically and work out runway per corridor. Polynopsis is built for this: one read-only position across every account, money in flight, and a warning before a corridor runs dry.

Frequently asked questions

Is corridor liquidity management the same as an interest rate corridor?

No. An interest rate corridor is how central banks bound short-term interest rates. In payments, corridor liquidity management means funding each sending and receiving route so payouts keep flowing.
