MT942 file format
SWIFT MT942 Interim Transaction Report
MT942 is the SWIFT intraday report. It lists account entries posted since the last report, with a floor limit, a timestamp and debit and credit totals.
Treasury and liquidity teams use MT942 to track same-day cash movements before the end-of-day MT940 arrives. Payment companies use it to release funds, fund accounts and spot incoming credits during the day.

Reading balances
The bank guides checked define no opening or closing balance tags for MT942. Take ledger balances from the previous MT940 :62F: and :64:. Add credits and subtract debits from each MT942, using :90C: and :90D: as control totals. For true intraday balances, request camt.052 with ITBD and ITAV.
Parsing and reconciliation pitfalls
- Reports can be cumulative or incremental depending on bank setup. Deduplicate entries by bank reference so repeated items are not posted twice.
- The :13D: offset carries the time zone. Convert to UTC before ordering reports from banks in different regions.
- Some banks emit :13: instead of :13D:. Citi's export does this by default, so accept both labels.
- A non-zero :34F: floor hides small entries. Totals in :90D: and :90C: then cover only reported items, not all activity.
- Intraday entries can be reversed or rebooked before end of day. Treat MT942 data as provisional and reconcile against the MT940.
How it compares
MT942 reports intraday entries; MT940 is the end-of-day statement with booked balances. camt.052 is the ISO 20022 equivalent and can carry interim balances (ITBD, ITAV) and pending entries. BAI2 handles intraday reporting through as-of-date modifier 3 and current balance codes 030 and 060.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between MT940 and MT942?
MT940 is the end-of-day statement with opening, closing and available balances. MT942 is an intraday report of entries since the last report. It adds a floor limit, timestamp and debit and credit totals, but no standard balance tags.
What does :34F: mean in MT942?
:34F: is the floor limit. Entries below this amount are left out. A first :34F: with D gives the debit floor; a second with C gives the credit floor. Banks often send zero to report everything.
Is MT942 being replaced by camt.052?
Yes, over time. Swift maps MT942 to camt.052. Its CBPR+ roadmap makes camt reporting mandatory to receive by November 2027 for bank-to-bank traffic. Corporate channels follow each bank's own timeline.
