ISO 20022

By · Last updated

ISO 20022 is an international standard for financial messages that carries structured, data-rich information about payments, statements and other transactions. Since 22 November 2025 it has been required for cross-border payment instructions between financial institutions on Swift.

How it works

The Swift community decided in 2018 to adopt ISO 20022 for cross-border payments and reporting. Swift's CBPR+ release went live in March 2023 with 15 usage guidelines covering payment initiation (pain), clearing and settlement (pacs) and cash management (camt) messages. Swift reports the standard in use in over 70 countries.

Domestic systems moved on their own timetables. The Bank of England migrated CHAPS on 19 June 2023 and began mandating certain enhanced data from May 2025. The Federal Reserve announced on 15 July 2025 that the Fedwire Funds Service had completed its migration. Fedwire settles more than $4.7 trillion a day on average.

The practical gain is structured data. Names, addresses, purpose codes and remittance details sit in separate fields rather than free text, which supports automatic matching and sanctions screening. RTP in the US also uses ISO 20022, which The Clearing House presents as a basis for real-time reconciliation.

Example

A payment firm receives 1,200 inbound payments a day worth $18,000,000. Under its old free-text process, 400 needed manual matching. With structured references in ISO 20022 messages, 1,080 match automatically and 120 go to review. At five minutes per item, that saves about 23 hours of work a day.

Frequently asked questions

Is ISO 20022 a payment network?

No. It is a message standard. Swift, Fedwire, CHAPS and RTP carry ISO 20022 messages over their own networks.

What do pain, pacs and camt mean?

They are ISO 20022 message families: pain for payment initiation, pacs for payment clearing and settlement, and camt for cash management, such as camt.053 statements.
