Prefunding vs Float (payments): what is the difference?

By · Last updated

Prefunding is money you place at the destination on purpose, before payouts, so recipients are paid without waiting. Float is money caught between accounts: it has left one place and is not yet usable in the next. Prefunding is a decision; float is a delay.

How they work together

Every prefund top-up spends time as float on its way to the partner. A team that counts the float can prefund less, because it knows which top-ups are already coming.

Where Polynopsis fits

Polynopsis shows the prefunded balance at every payout partner next to the payouts expected against it, so the team sees which partner needs topping up before the batch goes out, not after it fails.

Polynopsis counts float as its own line in the daily position: money that has left one account and not yet landed in another, so it is neither double counted nor forgotten.
