Can stablecoins replace prefunding?

By ·

Stablecoins reduce prefunding rather than replace it. Because stablecoin transfers settle on chain at any hour, a remittance company can top up a payout partner at weekends and overnight instead of holding days of cover, but the partner still pays recipients in local currency, so an off-ramp, local liquidity and a buffer are still needed. The balances simply move: from idle local cash to stablecoin wallets and off-ramp partners, which all have to be watched in one position.

What stablecoins change

Traditional prefunding holds enough local currency with each partner to cover payouts until the next bank transfer lands, including weekends and holidays when banks are closed. Stablecoins settle on chain outside banking hours, so a top-up can arrive on a Saturday and the cover needed shrinks.

What stays the same

Recipients are paid in local currency, so someone converts stablecoins to fiat through an off-ramp, and that conversion depends on local liquidity and market hours. Partners still need a working balance, and the firm still needs a buffer for spikes and delays.

New balances appear: stablecoin wallets, exchange accounts and off-ramp partner balances, each with its own counterparty and settlement timing.

Where Polynopsis fits

Polynopsis reads stablecoin wallets by public address and exchanges and custody platforms by read-only API key, next to bank and payout partner balances, so a team can see whether a stablecoin top-up has landed and how long each corridor will last.

Frequently asked questions

Do remittance companies still prefund if they use stablecoins?

Usually yes, but less. Stablecoins let top-ups arrive outside banking hours, which shortens the cover a partner needs, but local currency payouts still need a funded balance and an off-ramp.
