Stablecoin off-ramp
Stablecoin off-ramp refers to a service that converts stablecoins back into fiat and pays it to a bank account, wallet or recipient. It completes the cash leg of a stablecoin-settled payment.
How it works
Redemption with the issuer is one route. With Circle Mint, a customer creates a payout to a linked bank account and Circle debits its balance. Payouts typically settle the next business day. If the receiving bank returns the wire, the funds go back to the Mint balance.
Holders can also use exchanges, OTC desks or local payout partners. FATF notes holders need not use official redemption channels to convert to fiat. It also warns that unlicensed OTC brokers are used to cash out illicit funds. Off-ramp choice therefore carries compliance risk as well as pricing risk.
In a stablecoin-settled corridor, the off-ramp sits in the receiving market. Its banking hours, FX rate and liquidity decide when recipients are paid. Remitly describes stablecoins as an emerging rail that may complement existing infrastructure. A common pitfall is assuming on-chain speed means the fiat arrives at once.
Example
Illustrative example: A firm sends 500,000 USDC to an off-ramp in Nigeria. The provider converts at ₦1,500 per USDC and charges 0.5%. Gross proceeds are ₦750,000,000. After the ₦3,750,000 fee, ₦746,250,000 is credited to the payout account.
Frequently asked questions
How fast is a stablecoin off-ramp?
The on-chain transfer can be fast, but the fiat leg follows banking hours. Circle says Mint payouts to linked banks typically settle the next business day. Local off-ramps vary with their own rails and cut-offs.
What are the main off-ramp risks?
Counterparty risk with the provider, FX pricing, and compliance exposure if the provider is unlicensed. Returned wires and bank holidays can also delay credit. Check the provider's licenses and banking partners before routing volume.
