Cash pickup

By · Last updated

Cash pickup is a remittance payout method in which the recipient collects the money in cash at an agent location, bank branch or other outlet. The sender's provider makes the funds available for collection, often within minutes.

How it works

Remitly says its network includes approximately 490,000 cash pick-up options, including retail outlets and banks. Western Union's agent network spans more than 200 countries and territories, and about 360,000 of its locations conducted money transfer activity in the 12 months to 31 December 2025. Intermex makes funds available at its paying agents, usually within minutes.

The World Bank records the type of cash location for each service it tracks: agent, bank branch, post office or home delivery. Its price data cover receiving methods side by side. In Q3 2025, services disbursed in cash cost 5.56% on average, against 3.92% for transfers to a mobile wallet and a 6.36% global average.

Cash payout has its own treasury needs. The paying partner must have local currency cash on hand, and the sending firm funds it in advance or settles afterwards under their agreement. Remitly lists local cash pick-up institutions where it holds cash on deposit among the counterparties whose failure could cause it material losses.

Example

A firm sends 2,000 cash pickup transfers to Guatemala on a Friday, averaging $300 each. Its paying agent needs the quetzal equivalent of $600,000 available across its locations. If 15% are collected only on Monday, $90,000 of the funding stays committed but unused over the weekend.
