Real-time gross settlement (RTGS) vs Instant payments: what is the difference?

By · Last updated

RTGS systems settle large-value payments one by one in central bank money, usually within set operating hours. Instant payment systems credit the payee within seconds, around the clock, and are built for everyday payments. Many instant systems still settle their participants' positions through the RTGS.

How they work together

A payout partner's instant payouts run all weekend, but the RTGS top-up that refills it may wait for Monday. Prefunding has to cover the gap.

Where Polynopsis fits

Polynopsis shows each corridor's balance against the next payout batch, so a top-up can be sent before the RTGS cut-off that decides whether it lands today.

Instant payout rails spend a prefund around the clock. Polynopsis keeps the position live so a partner balance running low at the weekend is flagged before payouts fail.
