Instant payments
Instant payments are account-to-account transfers that credit the payee within seconds and run around the clock, every day of the year. The BIS describes fast payments as real-time or near real-time transfers between end users' accounts, as close to 24/7 as possible.
How it works
Households and businesses in more than 100 jurisdictions had access to fast payments by early 2024, according to the BIS. The largest markets in 2022 by number of transactions were India (48.6 billion), China (16.6 billion), Thailand (9.7 billion) and Brazil (8.7 billion). Settlement between providers can be real-time gross, as on FedNow, or deferred net, as with UPI.
Rules differ by system. The EU's Instant Payments Regulation requires the payee's provider to make funds available within 10 seconds and caps prices at those of standard credit transfers. In the US, RTP and FedNow each allow payments of up to $10 million. FedNow is open only to depository institutions, while Brazil's central bank requires large banks to join Pix.
For treasury teams, instant rails remove the weekend gap on the payout side but not on the funding side. FX markets, most RTGS systems and many correspondent banks still keep business-day hours. Instant payouts can drain a prefunded balance on a Saturday that cannot be refilled until Monday.
Example
A firm pays out £300,000 a day in the UK over Faster Payments, including weekends. Its sterling top-ups arrive only on business days. To cover Saturday and Sunday it must hold at least £600,000 on Friday evening, plus a buffer, because no new funds will land until Monday.
Frequently asked questions
Are instant payments final?
Each system sets finality in its rules. The Clearing House describes RTP settlement as final at any time, and TIPS offers final and irrevocable settlement. Fraud and error cases are handled through separate return and recovery processes.
Do instant payments work across borders?
Mostly within one system and currency, but links are growing. UPI and Singapore's PayNow have been linked for remittances since February 2023, and TIPS settles in euro, Swedish krona and Danish krone.
Where Polynopsis fits
