UPI (Unified Payments Interface)
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is India's real-time payment system, developed and managed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), that moves money between bank accounts through mobile apps. It launched in 2016 and is available round the clock.
Jurisdiction: India: operated by the National Payments Corporation of India under Reserve Bank of India oversight. Figures from the RBI Payment System Report covering calendar year 2025.
How it works
UPI processed 22,828 crore (228.3 billion) transactions worth Rs 300 lakh crore in calendar year 2025, up from 3,873 crore in 2021, according to the Reserve Bank of India. In the second half of 2025 it carried 85.5% of India's payment volume but 9.5% of value. The average transaction fell to Rs 1,313 in 2025.
End users are credited at once, but UPI settles between banks on a deferred net basis, the BIS notes. The central bank and private banks govern UPI's rules jointly through NPCI. UPI supports confirmation of payee, which checks the payee's name against the account identifier before payment.
Cross-border links are growing. UPI and Singapore's PayNow have been linked for real-time remittances since February 2023. UPI QR payments work in Bhutan, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the UAE. For inbound remittance firms, UPI is a route to Indian bank accounts at any hour.
Example
An inbound remittance firm pays out Rs 50 crore a day through UPI and IMPS. Its dollar to rupee conversions happen only on Indian market days. Before a three-day holiday weekend it holds Rs 150 crore of payout cover, plus a buffer, by the close of the last market day.
Frequently asked questions
Does UPI settle in real time between banks?
No. Recipients are credited immediately, but banks settle with each other on a deferred net basis.
Can money sent from abroad land through UPI?
Yes. Linked systems such as Singapore's PayNow send directly, and Indian banks and payout partners credit UPI-linked accounts.
