USDC on Solana: contract, finality, fees and monitoring
USDC on Solana is Circle's dollar token on a chain with 200 millisecond slots, holding 6.50 billion USDC on 27 October 2026. Since the Alpenglow upgrade went live on 21 October 2026, Solana targets finality in roughly 150 milliseconds and 'confirmed' and 'finalized' describe the same state; fees are a 5,000 lamport base fee per signature plus an optional priority fee, and balances are read from each wallet's associated token account with RPC calls such as getTokenAccountsByOwner.

The token
- USDC is a digital dollar issued by Circle, and Circle publishes monthly attestation reports on USDC reserve holdings. source
- As of 27 October 2026, Circle's public supply API shows 6,496,287,284 USDC on Solana. source
- Circle publishes a monthly third-party assurance report on USDC reserves from a Big Four accounting firm, prepared under AICPA attestation standards, and discloses reserve holdings weekly. source
- Most of the USDC reserve is held in the Circle Reserve Fund (USDXX), an SEC-registered 2a-7 government money market fund managed by BlackRock; the remainder is held in cash, mostly at large banks. source
- Only holders of a Circle Mint account can redeem USDC directly with Circle, at 1 USD per 1 USDC less any applicable fees, after completing Circle's KYC. source
- Solana is CCTP domain 5 in Circle's Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol, which moves USDC between supported chains by burning on the source chain and minting on the destination. source
The chain: finality and fees
- Alpenglow, Solana's new consensus protocol, is live on mainnet; it activated in epoch 1064, which started on 21 October 2026 at about 13:36 UTC. source
- Alpenglow targets finality of roughly 150 milliseconds, down from 12.8 seconds, with the actual time varying with stake distribution and the number of voting rounds. source
- Solana slot times were cut from 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds in four stages that completed in October 2026. source
- Under Alpenglow a block can be finalised after one round if at least 80% of stake votes to notarise it; otherwise a second round with 60% stake thresholds decides. source
- Every Solana transaction pays a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature, half burned and half paid to the validator. source
- The optional priority fee is the compute unit price (in micro-lamports) multiplied by the compute unit limit, divided by 1,000,000, and goes entirely to the validator. source
- Solana's exchange guide strongly recommends priority fees, since transactions without them can be delayed or dropped, and suggests basing the fee on getRecentPrioritizationFees for the accounts the transaction writes to. source
- Each SPL token account must hold a rent-exempt minimum of 0.00203928 SOL (2,039,280 lamports), so every new wallet that holds USDC needs SOL for its token account. source
Issuer controls
- A Solana token issuer can hold a freeze authority over accounts for its mint, and the authority's public key is recorded in the mint account. source
- The USDC mint on Solana has a freeze authority set, which Helius cites as an example of a freeze authority used to stop stolen assets moving. source
- A frozen token account cannot receive, transfer or burn tokens until the freeze authority thaws it. source
- Circle's USDC Terms (updated 15 October 2026) reserve the right to block USDC transfers to and from an on-chain address under its blocklisting policy, and to freeze USDC sent to or received from a blocked address. source
- Circle states it can be required to freeze USDC and surrender the associated US dollars if it receives a legal order from a valid government authority, and holders of affected USDC can lose the ability to redeem it. source
Monitoring float on this rail
- Since Alpenglow, the 'confirmed' and 'finalized' commitment levels describe the same state; Solana advises pointing new code at 'finalized' and says 'confirmed' will be removed in a later release. source
- The 'processed' commitment level is unchanged and can still be rolled back, so balances read at 'processed' are not final. source
- Solana advises re-checking any timeout, retry or delay tuned around the old 12.8-second finality, and telling indexers to stop assuming one block per slot. source
- Circle Mint credits Solana USDC deposits after 1 confirmation, which Circle puts at around 200 milliseconds. source
- Solana's exchange guide derives deposit addresses with the Associated Token Account scheme and computes each transfer from preTokenBalances and postTokenBalances in the block. source
- Solana's payments guide says to hardcode or allowlist the USDC mint address, because spoofed tokens often copy USDC's name and symbol, and notes public RPC endpoints are rate-limited with no SLA. source

Reading balances by API

| Solana RPC getTokenAccountsByOwner | Returns the token accounts a wallet owns, filtered by mint; with jsonParsed encoding each result carries tokenAmount (amount, decimals, uiAmount, uiAmountString). | source |
| Solana RPC getMultipleAccounts | Reads up to 100 accounts in one request, so the USDC token accounts of many treasury wallets can be fetched together. | source |
| Coinbase Developer Platform, list Solana token balances | GET /v2/solana/token-balances/solana/{address} returns SOL and SPL token balances for one address, 20 per page by default; Coinbase describes the endpoint as still under development. | source |
| Alchemy Portfolio API, token balances by wallet | Returns native and token balances, including SPL tokens, for each wallet and network combination in one request. | source |

Frequently asked questions
When is a USDC transfer on Solana final?
Since Alpenglow activated on 21 October 2026, Solana targets finality in roughly 150 milliseconds, and the 'confirmed' and 'finalized' commitment levels describe the same state. Circle Mint credits Solana deposits after 1 confirmation. Only 'processed' can still be rolled back.
What does a USDC transfer on Solana cost?
A base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature, plus an optional priority fee set by compute unit price times compute unit limit. Solana recommends always adding a priority fee. A new wallet's USDC token account also needs 0.00203928 SOL to be rent exempt.
How do we read USDC balances across many Solana wallets?
Each wallet holds USDC in an associated token account for the USDC mint. getTokenAccountsByOwner with a mint filter returns a wallet's USDC accounts, and getMultipleAccounts reads up to 100 accounts in one call.
Can Circle freeze USDC in our Solana wallet?
Yes. The USDC mint has a freeze authority, and a frozen token account cannot send, receive or burn tokens until thawed. Circle's terms reserve the right to block addresses under its blocklisting policy.
