Why this matters for prefunding
When South Africa banks or payment rails close, a top-up sent to a local payout partner may not land until the next business day. Remittance demand often rises around the same holidays. Fund the corridor before the closure, sized for the closed days plus your normal top-up lead time. Check your corridor runway.

Payment rails and operating hours
| Rail | Operator | Hours | Runs on holidays |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAMOS (South African Multiple Option Settlement, RTGS) | South African Reserve Bank | System is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with weekly maintenance on Sundays 06:00 to 17:00 SAST when it may be unavailable. SARB notices state that no settlement takes place via SAMOS on public holidays (e.g. 4 Nov 2026, 25 and 26 Dec 2025, 1 Jan 2026). Business Operation Centre staffed Mon to Fri 07:30 to 17:00 (Nov to Mar). | no source |
| RTC (Real-Time Clearing) | PayInc (formerly BankservAfrica); clearing house managed under PASA | Not 24/7 according to SARB's 2020 faster payments consultation paper, which notes cut-off times. Current hours vary by bank and were not confirmed. | unknown source |
| PayShap | PayInc (formerly BankservAfrica) | 24/7 | yes source |
Extra holiday: Wednesday 4 Nov 2026 (Local Government Elections), with no SAMOS settlement. December 2026 closures are Wed 16 Dec, Fri 25 Dec and Fri 1 Jan; Day of Goodwill falls on Saturday 26 Dec so there is no Monday substitute. SARB publishes a December/January holiday memo each year; the 2026/27 memo was not yet found, so check it for early FX desk closures on 24 and 31 Dec (in 2025 the FX desk closed at 12:00 on those days). PayShap runs 24/7/365 (confirmed from secondary sources, not a PayInc page). RTC hours could not be confirmed. Source conflict: LeaveBalance lists 1 May and 9 Aug 2027 as Sundays with Monday substitutes; both are wrong (1 May 2027 is a Saturday, 9 Aug 2027 a Monday). This dataset follows the statute and the calendar.
