Cross River: balances, prefunding and reporting
Cross River Bank is a New Jersey state-chartered, FDIC-insured bank whose COS platform gives fintechs and payment companies API access to ACH, wires, RTP, FedNow, its internal CRNow rail, outbound international payments and USDC onchain payments. Clients usually hold funds in an FBO master account with subledgers and track balances through the COS Explorer console, the subledger API, webhooks, monthly PDF statements and a Daily Account Balance report delivered by SFTP.
What Cross River does
- Cross River's COS banking core runs in real time 24/7. Each night it settles all master accounts and re-sequences the day's activity records with credits before debits, so a statement balance can differ from the balance shown right after a posting. source
- International Payments send money abroad over SWIFT and local in-country rails through a correspondent banking network, with executable FX quotes available 24/5 and routing chosen by corridor, transaction size and currency. source
- Onchain payments let configured accounts send and receive USDC on Ethereum and Solana, using account-bound receiving addresses and webhooks such as Crypto.Payment.OnchainPaymentDetected and Crypto.Payment.Received. source
Coverage
- International Payments are outbound only and for entities based in the United States, and they do not include foreign-currency wallet holding. source
- The International Payments supported countries table lists 49 countries, with currencies, SWIFT or local rail availability and FX cutoff times in EST; USD to USD transfers cut off at 11:30 EST. source
- Instant payments run on RTP and FedNow, each with a 10,000,000 USD per-transaction limit, and on Cross River's CRNow rail, which has no inherent network limit. Cross River also sets a daily instant payment send limit per partner, recalculated every 10 minutes and reset at 1 pm ET, with a webhook to track utilisation. source
How funds are held and prefunded
- Companies that send payments for their customers typically hold those funds in an FBO account titled to the company for the benefit of its users, with subledgers used to track each customer's funds. If Cross River provides FDIC pass-through insurance on a pooled FBO account, the partner reports balance and reconciliation to Cross River every day. source
- Each subledger has its own account and routing numbers, and subledger and master balances update atomically and always sum to the master balance. Passthrough subledgers can run negative because COS checks the master account balance, while direct subledgers reject any payout larger than the subledger balance. source

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Cross River statement balance differ from the balance I saw during the day?
COS re-sequences each day's activity records at nightly settlement, listing credits before debits, so the statement balance can differ from the balance shown just after a posting.
How do I get a daily balance file from Cross River?
The Daily Account Balance by Partner report is a CSV with available and current balances for each master account. It is generated at 3 AM EST and delivered PGP-encrypted by SFTP, and MT940 is available through your relationship manager.
Can a Cross River subledger go negative?
A passthrough subledger can, because COS checks the master account balance. A direct subledger cannot; payouts larger than its balance are rejected.
