Fireblocks: balances, prefunding and reporting
Fireblocks is a digital asset custody and treasury platform where cross-border payment companies hold stablecoins in their own MPC-secured vault accounts, connect exchange and fiat provider accounts, and move funds to counterparties over the Fireblocks Network. Balances are read per vault and asset through the REST API (GET /v1/vault/accounts/{vaultAccountId}/{assetId}), pushed by vault_account.asset.balance_updated webhooks and shown in the Console, and a view-only Viewer API user can monitor them without signing rights.
What Fireblocks does
- Fireblocks uses a direct custody model in which the customer stays the owner and controller of its assets. The platform combines MPC-based wallets, a Policy Engine for transaction rules and approvals, and treasury management tools. source
- Wallets are organised into vault accounts, either segregated or omnibus. An omnibus setup uses intermediate vault accounts per end client for deposits, a central omnibus deposits vault, and withdrawal pool vaults. source
- The Fireblocks Network for Payments, announced in September 2025, launched with more than 40 providers including Circle, Bridge, Yellow Card, Zerohash, OpenPayd and dLocal, and includes tools for sanctions screening, wallet verification and Travel Rule compliance. source
Coverage
- Fireblocks supports thousands of assets across dozens of blockchain networks, and publishes a list of globally supported assets that it refreshes monthly. source
- At its launch, the Fireblocks Network for Payments covered more than 100 countries and on and off-ramps, issuers, liquidity providers, on-chain FX and remittance for over 60 currencies. source
How funds are held and prefunded
- Fireblocks Trust Company provides qualified custody with segregated client assets held on a bankruptcy-remote basis. source
- Each vault asset reports total (the on-chain balance), available (blockchain balance minus locked amounts), pending, frozen, lockedAmount (outgoing transactions not yet published) and staked. source
How to see your Fireblocks balance
| Channel | What it gives you | Source |
|---|---|---|
| API | GET /v1/vault/accounts/{vaultAccountId}/{assetId} returns one vault wallet's balance for a specific asset. Admin, Non-Signing Admin, Signer, Approver, Editor and Viewer roles can call it. | source |
| API | GET /v1/vault/accounts_paged lists vault accounts, GET /v1/vault/assets returns an asset balance summary across all or filtered vault accounts, and GET /v1/vault/assets/{assetId} returns one asset's total across all vault accounts. All three are open to the Viewer role. | source |
| webhook | vault_account.asset.balance_updated carries the full balance (total, pending, frozen, lockedAmount, staked), not a delta, plus blockHeight and blockHash when available. Fireblocks recommends matching it against transaction.status.updated before crediting deposits. | source |
| read-only key | The Viewer API key type is view-only and can only view transaction history, in production and sandbox. The Security Auditor type is also view-only and can view workspace elements too. | source |
| API | GET /v1/exchange_accounts/paged lists the exchange accounts connected to the workspace, and GET /v1/fiat_accounts lists fiat accounts. Both require the Admin or Non-Signing Admin role rather than Viewer. | source |

Frequently asked questions
Which Fireblocks endpoint returns a vault balance?
GET /v1/vault/accounts/{vaultAccountId}/{assetId} returns total, available, pending, frozen, locked and staked amounts for one asset in one vault account.
Can I connect a monitoring tool to Fireblocks without signing rights?
Yes. Create an API user with the Viewer role. It is view-only and can call the vault account and balance endpoints.
Do Fireblocks balance webhooks send the change or the full balance?
The full balance. Each vault_account.asset.balance_updated event replaces the stored balance and includes blockHeight and blockHash when available.
