Launching payments in Sri Lanka: the stack
Paying out in Sri Lanka means crediting rupees through a CBSL-licensed bank: foreign money transfer operators tie up with licensed banks, which pay beneficiaries to accounts over LankaPay's 24/7 CEFTS (up to Rs. 5 million per transfer), to mobile wallets or as cash, and CBSL has licensed no crypto exchange. Cross-border payment companies typically pair a payout network such as Thunes, TerraPay or Nium, or a direct remittance tie-up with a bank such as Commercial Bank or Sampath Bank, with rupee FX from the interbank market of licensed commercial banks and document-based KYC.

- The rupee depreciated 7.9% against the US dollar in the first half of 2026, with the indicative spot rate moving from Rs. 309.99 at end-December 2025 to Rs. 336.66 at end-June 2026. source
