Launching payments in Ecuador: the stack
Paying out in Ecuador means delivering US dollars, the country's legal tender, to bank and cooperative accounts through the Banco Central del Ecuador's SPI clearing (three cuts on business days) or real-time bank networks, or as cash through banks and BCE-authorised remittance companies, with no currency conversion on the receiving side. Cross-border senders typically use payout partners such as dLocal, Nium and TerraPay, paying banks such as Banco Pichincha and Banco Guayaquil, and identity checks against the Registro Civil through Verifik or Didit.

Funding and prefunding USD payouts
- SPI runs in three cuts a day (files before 09:00, 13:00 and 16:45, returned at 09:20, 13:20 and 17:05), so account credits through SPI wait for the next cut. source
- On the national holiday of 3 and 4 November 2025 the BCE received SPI orders only as deferred, did not run its online payment system (SPL) or specialised clearing house (CCE), did not process transfers to and from abroad, and settled 31 October cheque clearing on 5 November. source
- Real-time transfers through BANRED's Pago Directo settle finally at the BCE's specialised clearing house once a day (BCE technical note, March 2024), not transfer by transfer. source
- Ecuador charges the 5% Impuesto a la Salida de Divisas on transfers abroad (2026 general rate), which applies when surplus dollars held in Ecuador are sent back out; transfers are exempt up to USD 1,446 per fortnight in 2026. source
- Since 1 January 2026 the United States has charged a 1% tax on remittance transfers, as the Electronic Fund Transfer Act defines them (transfers that consumers send to recipients abroad), when the sender pays the provider in cash, by money order, by cashier's check or with a similar physical instrument; transfers funded from an account at a US financial institution or with a US-issued debit or credit card are exempt. The sender owes the tax, and the provider collects it and remits it quarterly. source

Frequently asked questions
Is there an FX conversion when paying out in Ecuador?
No. The US dollar is Ecuador's legal tender, so payout partners such as dLocal and Nium pay USD into local accounts. The FX leg sits wherever the sender collects funds.
When do interbank credits through SPI land?
SPI settles at the BCE in three cuts a day, with files loaded before 09:00, 13:00 and 16:45 returned at 09:20, 13:20 and 17:05. On national holidays the BCE takes SPI orders only as deferred.
Does Ecuador have 24/7 instant payments?
BANRED's Pago Directo offers real-time interbank transfers, settled at the BCE once a day (BCE technical note, March 2024). BCE regulation requires real-time payments 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with inter-network payments routed through the BCE's Sistema Integrador de Pagos once the BCE enables it; until then the networks clear their own payments and settle at the BCE.
Who licenses remittance companies in Ecuador?
The BCE authorises participants of the auxiliary payment system, and money remittance is one of the authorised services. Its register, updated 12 October 2026, lists remittance companies such as Delgado Travel, Global81 Ecuador and Quickex Ecuador.
Can stablecoins be used to pay out in Ecuador?
The BCE states that crypto assets are neither legal tender nor an authorised means of electronic payment in Ecuador. Payouts are made in US dollars.
How large are remittance inflows to Ecuador?
USD 7,729.5 million in 2025, a record and 18.2% more than in 2024, equal to 5.9% of GDP. The second quarter of 2026 brought USD 2,041.3 million, 78.5% of it from the United States.
